Atlantis Space Shuttle Launch May 14, 2010. Kristofer and I flew down to Orlando to visit the happiest place on earth and see the magnificent Space Shuttle launch. With only 2 more scheduled after this we knew we had to seize the chance to see one of the final launches.
I was more than prepared with a camera, video recorder and my binoculars (and of course plenty of sunscreen). They tell you upfront where to look because at the speed of sound you’ll see it before you hear it. I was ready.
Now the thing about a launch, and what might be perfectly obvious on an intellectual level, is that they happen quickly. Too quickly to manage between 3 visual aids/devices – much less just enjoying the experience! Some people kept their cameras to their faces for the whole 10 seconds while I sort of alternated between naked eye, video and a few camera pics. It’s over way before there is any time to take it all in. All you know is there’s a space shuttle with lots of fire below creating clouds in its path and humans are being catapulted into outer space. Yes, it was cool.

January 15th, 2006 Kristofer and I visited my brother, who was doing hurricane relief work for FEMA. We got a very special tour of the destruction – the worst situation I´ve seen anywhere on my trip! We visited the 9th Ward and other sites around New Orleans. We all got rashes from the sludge.
On our way to Mobile we drove through Biloxi which was completely wiped out. At that point we were getting hungry and decided to stop at the casino in case it was open. There were so many cars out front we realized they were probably using it as temporary housing. Alas, no. The casino was packed full of people gambling at the slots and tables. Imagine, an area completely devastated (I mean wiped out – not even a car in a tree) and the casino is packed full. Hmmm. Something seems wrong with that.

If you like the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia has all of that on steroids. Here are some photos from a few different trips.

I visited the south island of New Zealand in mid August 2005 – smack dab in their winter. This was during the height of their Lord of the Rings glory, although they are probably still hugely into it. My trip coincided with Kylie, Niklas, Astrid, and Kylie’s mom (all from Melbourne) being there which provided loads of amusement. They had the most fun imitating the New Zealand accent although I could barely tell the difference. I think it was like someone from Texas imitating someone from Georgia.
New Zealand was beautiful in terms of both land and people. My favorite were the yellow-eyed penguins. I took a special tour to see Albatross while I was there and was disappointed to find out they are just really big seagulls. With a name like Albatross I expected dinosaurs or something. That was an example of how traveling with a guidebook would have been helpful. Although a guidebook probably wouldn’t have said just really big seagulls. The fur seals were cool, too.
