I headed directly to Siem Reap to check out the Angkor Wat temples. They were mighty impressive! The temples of Angkor Wat are around 800 or so years old. They were remarkably well preserved considering they were surrounded by rainforest.

Hong Kong was an action packed 2 days! Lots of city-life!
I only have a couple photos. Mostly it’s just a bunch of buildings and a hazy waterfront. I wasn’t much into shopping (let’s face it, cheap “stuff” just ain’t my style) but I did enjoy the nightlife – hence lack of photos.

An excellent blend of Portuguese and Chinese cultures. The perfect break after traveling in China!

Erlian – the grandest place on earth.
Truly, I had never seen such
greatness. Hard to believe such
splendor could be on the border
opposite Mongolia/hell hole.
Babies & small children all
over China had pants
without “bottoms” so that
they could be held over
streets and trash cans to
poop and pee. At first I thought
the spitting was the grossest thing.

S. Korea is the absolute,
hands down capital of
fake goods. Ferragamo shoes,
Mont Blanc pens and of
course the Louis and Gucci.
Nothing is more important
than the label.

Do NOT travel here! Enjoy the pictures, but don’t travel to Mongolia!!!
Aside from the people being abrasive and generally unfriendly, this is the only time I’ve ever been harassed and extorted money from. And the response from the US Embassy – the locals always win! Kristofer and I had pleasant times together, but it was difficult dealing with people and especially their dirty ways. I never knew I would be so happy to reach China!
Mongolia is a great country though if you like exotic (and sun/age fermented) meats, drunk drivers, abused women/wives, and either wretchedly scandalous or completely ignorant people. I highly recommend China.
Note: You may notice references to Russia in the captions. By no means am I anti-Russia (I am only anti-Mongolia). My reference is to how Mongolians didn’t do anything to preserve the buildings built by Russians in towns across the country. It isn’t that the Mongolians didn’t have a use for the buildings. No, they still lived in the buildings, used them as town halls, etc. and just let them completely deteriorate. There are plenty of ‘low income’ countries I’ve visited all over the world where people take pride in what they have and do there best to maintain their surroundings. Mongolia is not one of these countries.
Lazy ass Mongolians in the
capitol. Sure it’s recreation
- recreation from beating
their wives and drinking heavily.
President of Mongolia -
Nambaryn Enkhbayar at
the 800 Year Celebration
of the “great” Mongol
Gengis Khan.
Such a beautiful temple.
First you pay to go inside,
then you pay to take pictures,
then you pay if you want to
take video. Foreigner price.
Paid to monks.
Greedy ass bastards.
Our driver and the roadside
archery hosts. Is it more
disturbing that Kristofer &
I were better at archery than
they were or that Kristofer was
wearing his jean rolled up like that?
Oh, I love this.
Can’t remember the city.
Left by the Russians & the
Mongolians didn’t do a
thing to maintain it.
I was sitting in a field in the
middle of absolutely nowhere,
this guy trotted over,
sat down, lit up, smoked
his pipe and off he went.

What a fabulous country! I knew hardly anything about Taiwan before going, but there are many scenic areas and the people are very welcoming. Their tourism slogan is “Let’s be friends” – that says it all!

I’ve been to Japan 3 times in the past 4 years. Love it. When I arrived in Tokyo I had no idea why I hadn’t been there before. What was I doing in Europe for so long? Why do Americans always go to Europe when they have a perfectly sophisticated friend just to the East? Sure, I highly recommend traveling around the rest of Asia, but for those Americans who want abroad, but clean, this is the place. I did meet a college student from Chicago who went to Japan for his first time ever abroad, and I met a fabulous Finn who didn’t even bring a camera. That’s what you get in Japan. A better kind of tourist.

End of October 2005. My last stop on the Asia tour round 1. I spent most of my time in Hanoi and Hoi An doing way too much shopping. Their tailors are fantastic.
Hanoi. This may be a religion
I can really get in tune with.
As you’ll notice from the offering
on the plate on the right,
this Buddha likes cookies.
Ha Long Bay. I really
just wanted a picture of
the structure and a ship
behind it, but it seems the
children had another agenda.
