Beginning of October 2005 and again a year later. One of my very favorite countries. I visited Manila, the rice terraces around Banaue, the hanging tombs of Sagada, and the beautiful island Palawan on trip number 1. On trip number 2 I again arrived in Manila, but then headed south to Negros, Cebu, and Bohol.
Manila: This is the local form
of transport evidently in all
of the Philippines. They’re
called Jeepneys and are vehicles
left over from the US in WWII.
Banaue – a 9 hour bus ride
north of Manila. This was the
view from my hotel room
(where I paid 3USD a night –
pretty good for that view!).
Near Banaue. One of the
many amazing terraces. All
the terraces I have pictures of
are around/in Banaue where
they are 2000 years old.
Rice terraces of Batad.
I can’t remember in which
hut the Professor, Maryanne,
Ginger, Gilligan, the Moviestar, the
Millionaire and his wife and
the captain all lived in.
But I’m sure they were there!
In Sagada coffins were often
stored in caves. Here they
are about 200 years old and
piled high at the cave entrance.
Also in Sagada, these are the
hanging coffins. The blue one
is recent from August 05 (I was there
in October). Village elders are
still buried in these coffins today.
This was the first of several times
the bus was pulled up a muddy
hill on the 10 hour trek from
Puerto Princessa to El Nido on Palawan.
This (I kid you not) is the view
from my room.
Yes, life is rough.
Although I must admit I
splurged and paid 7USD a night.
And a dirt runway to boot!
Before boarding we waited around
outside laying in hammocks
(the waiting room under the trees).
I flew from El Nido, Palawan
back to Manila. This is a picture
of the airport just before I
boarded the plane. I was serenaded
by some lovely locals.
